Olympic Games

In 490 a greek runner called Pheidipides ran about 42 km from Marathon to Athens. He brought news of the battles of Athens. He ran too far, too fast so he died from exhaustion. In memory of Pheidipides at the first modern olympic games in Athens, athletes ran a long distance race. The first recorded Olympic games took place in Olympia in the year 776 B.C.. The games were probably a part of religions ceremony, honoring the greek god Zeus. They were  so important for greeks that even wars were stopped while they were organized. The stadium where the competitions were held was two hundred meter long and thirty two meter wide. In the stadium there were only judges and competitors. The competitors used to run naked and bare foot. In 708 B.C., Olympic games included jumping, javeling, throwing and wrestling. The games continue every 4 years. Until 394 A.D., when the Roman imperor Theodius abolished them as a pagan ritual.

Modern Olympic games:

The Olympic games were revived in the year 1896 by a French pedagogue and historian Pierre de Couberten. He was an idealistic dreamer who saw athletics as a way of improving the educational system in France and the Olympic games as a means or harmonizing the world. In1892 was the national jubilee of the French union of athletic clubs. Pierre de Couberten helped delegates with French president Sedicarnot as official patron and an apperiance by grand duke, Vladimir of Russia. The grand amphitheatre of Sorbona university was offered for resurection of the Olympic games. But there were some questions. Would be athletes naked as they were in antient Greece? Should women be kept away? Would it be just for the French? Couberten said: ”It would be for all mankind. Olympic games would be held every four years always at a diffrent location, consists of modern sports and would be opened only to amateurs.”. The international Olympic committee was estabilished which consisted of Pierre de Couberten plus a list of members who were willing to land a hand for this good idea. Couberten and Bicalas, a great delegate proposed Athens as the sight of the 1st modern Olympic games took place in Olympia. So the modern Olympic games are supposed to be competitions between individuals and nations.

My attitude to sport:

I love sport. It has always played an importnt role in my life. When I was a child I was keen on such sports as football and hockey. Later I became interested in various ball games like volleyball, basketball or tennis. As for watching sports I love to see football, ice-hockey or handball. I think sport is something that most of the people enjoy and they know that it´s also good for their condition.
