SPORTS IN GREAT BRITAIN AND THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Sports are very good for active relaxation and are important for our physical and mental health.

There are lots of types of sports and games. We can practise outdoor and indoor sports, in water or anywhere we want. Outdoor sports are follows: skiing, golf, sledding, windsurfing, marathon-running, fishing, climbing, hiking or tourism, mountaineering, horse riding, ralleys. Indoor sports include: chess, table-tennis, gymnastics. Ball games, athletics, tennis, shooting, skating may be practised both outdoor and indoor. There are also aquatic sports like water skiing, swimming, diving, water polo, yachting, rowing.

People all around the world participate in for sports. Ball games are popular all over the world. Many people go to the hills or mountains - where are adapted slopes and down-hill runs for skiing. During Autumn, American Football and Baseball are very popular in America. Millions of people like to attend matches, watch them on TV or listen to them on the radio and cross their finger for their favourite team.

Many sports have their origin in Britain, that is why Britain is sometimes called the cradle of sports. Two types of rugby, modern game of hockey, cricket, darts, tennis and boxing were invented in Britain. Golf has its origin in Scotland. The major sport events in Britain are: Wimbledon, The British Open Golf Championship, The Grand National (the horse-race steeplechase).

But there are other very important sports events, the best known are the Olympic Games. In Antiquity they were the religious festivals held in Olympia in Greek. At the ancient Games no medals were awarded. Winners received only laurels. The last ancient Games were held in 393 AD. Revival of the Olympic was initiated at the end of the 19th century by a French aristocrat Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The first Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. Winter sports were not included in the ancient Olympic Games, nor, at first in the modern Olympics. The first Olympic Winter Games were awarded to Chamonix, France in 1924.
